Project Profile
Washington Dulles International Airport Instrumentation & Monitoring - Automated People Mover
Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority
Reston, VA
FEA provided instrumentation services during construction for an underground station for the Automated People Mover tunnels at Dulles International Airport. The project involved monitoring the existing main terminal building structure during excavation and the associated shoring system. These elements monitored include ground surface and building settlement marks, inclinometer casings, tilt meters, and targets on the face of excavation.
FEA installed 32 tilt meters, 71 settlement monitoring strips, 14 ground settlement points, and 100 shoring system monitoring points. Robotic theodolites read the monitoring points. Data from the theodolites and tilt sensors is relayed via wireless modem and the internet to our office for review and analysis. In addition, FEA read 15 inclinometers, installed by others, on a regular basis and transmit data reports to the contractor weekly.
Scope Items:
- Design and install an array of instruments to allow detection of movement or settlement of track rails
- Automated remote data collection at FEA office
- Real time data sampling and posting to website for easy access and review by FEA engineers and the client
- Predetermined thresholds for movements allowing immediate contingency response by contractor to site conditions
