“The data was there – They said. How Open Source Social Media Data can be Utilized for School Safety” The vast majority of recent school violence attacks have had precursors leaked online in the form of social media posts. Knowing where, how, and when to look for this critical information is the current challenge this nation faces. The real time gathering and assessment of publicly available social media data plays an imperative role in mitigating and preventing school violence. The latest trends in social media use and misuse, the current landscape of digital behavioral violence threat/risk assessment, and relevant open source information gathering techniques will be covered.

Frank DeAngelis, Retired Principal, Columbine High School, Littleton, CO
Two teenaged gunman took the lives of 13 students and adults. His students. His Facility. His Friends. It changed his life forever, in ways that most can’t begin to fathom. In this session, “Mr. D” (as he is known to his students) will talk about the events of that day, the response, the aftermath, how it changed his life and the lives of his family. And the recovery process. His message will clearly make everyone in attendance realize that disasters can occur anytime, anywhere on any given day.

School Safety Planning for Students with Special Needs
This session will address the impact of a disability in all stages of crisis planning including prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. It will also stress the importance of a diverse crisis team and safety planning committee that include members such as nurses, occupational and physical therapists, speech language pathologists; proactive planning and decision making; establishing positive ongoing partnerships with first responders; and education and training for students’ parents, staff, and first responders in order to ensure the safety of all.
